It is critical that a prosecutor's office collaborate with the state lab in solving the challenge of lab backlogs. If cases are outsourced to private labs to solve the backlog problems, the prosecutor's office may have to absorb additional costs of expert witness fees and transportation of private DNA analysts. These costs may not have been foreseen and included in the prosecutor's office budget and can be considerably expensive.
