The regions of interests are called and, with the exception of identical twins, people differ in the number of copies they have of a particular repeated DNA sequence. For example, a chromosome from one individual may contain 18 copies of a particular sequence whereas the same chromosome from a different individual may contain 25 copies of that same sequence.
