The conclusion of any opening statement should be a charge to jurors to hold the defendant accountable for the criminal conduct and a request for them to return a guilty verdict. Accountability is the touchstone for the desired outcome in a criminal prosecution.

Many jurors make up their minds regarding a case after opening statements. The opening statement is the foundation for closing arguments
