After the initial qualifying voir dire, the substantive portion of the DNA analyst's direct examination will begin. A prosecutor's line of questioning should be focused so the state's DNA analyst can provide a straightforward explanation of the science of DNA, what it is and how long it has been used, and how it is unique to each individual.

Note: For additional information pertaining to substantive DNA testimony, review the course Principles of Forensic DNA for Officers of the Court (see module 13, Trial Presentation).
