With this solicitation, NIJ seeks applications for research on, and demonstration projects of, improved approaches to measuring community perceptions of policing and public safety. Specifically, NIJ seeks to fund research that develops and tests innovative methods to provide representative samples that are accurate across microgeographic areas, cost-effective, able to be implemented frequently, and scalable for use in municipalities of various sizes.

Try Again, Fail Again, Fail Better: Lessons from Community Courts

Change doesn't come easy, particularly within an institution as large and complex as the criminal justice system. Greg Berman, Director of the Center for Court Innovation, offered lessons from several efforts to make reform stick in criminal justice settings. In particular, he focused on the development of community courts — experimental court projects that are attempting to reduce both crime and incarceration in dozens of cities across the U.S. and around the world.

Cell Phones in Prison

Criminals are using cell phones illegally in prisons and jails to conduct their business and intimidate witnesses. Although technology solutions to this problem are available, they can create new challenges, such as legal and implementation issues associated with cell phone use in correctional facilities. Panelists will discuss various aspects to consider from how prisoners use cell phones, to day-to-day and operational aspects, to legal and regulatory concerns.

Research and Evaluation on Domestic Radicalization to Violent Extremism

This webinar will provide details and guidance for potential applicants to help build knowledge and evidence related to strategies for effective prevention and intervention of domestic radicalization and violent extremism in the United States. The overall purpose of this program will be to reduce the likelihood that acts of violent extremism occur. This funding will support replication and evaluation of existing programs as well as development and evaluation of programs where none currently exist.

Elder Abuse Prevention Demonstration Project: Planning Phase

NIJ, in collaboration with other Federal agencies, is interested in funding a cooperative agreement to conduct a rigorous, multi-year demonstration project to prevent abuse, neglect, and/or financial exploitation among community-residing elderly individuals identified to be at risk.
