Abstract
The five primary articles of this edition of TechBeat deal with technology issues in law enforcement and research efforts in government and private industry on improving technology used in public safety efforts. CSI Classroom Prepares Students for Real-World Investigations examines curriculum developed to provide officers with hands-on opportunities for learning new techniques for collecting physical evidence. Many Agencies, One Voice examines the lack of a unified voice at the national level for dealing with the problems of small and rural police agencies. Many Locks + One Key = Improved Security discusses implementation of an improved electronic key system used by a county jail in Oregon. Tool Provides Information Access for Emergency Response discusses the Asset Protection and Response System, developed after the 1999 Columbine High School shooting. Justice Atlas of Sentencing and Corrections discusses the Justice Atlas of Sentencing and Corrections, a new mapping tool available for tracking offenders returning from prison and those under probation and parole supervision. A final section includes updates on current technology projects, programs, and initiatives being conducted by the Office of Justice Programs' National Institute of Justice and the centers and criminal justice technology Centers of Excellence (CoEs) that constitute its National Law Enforcement and Corrections Technology Center (NLECTC) System.
