These selected findings pertain to data-collection methods and findings for the evaluation of Police-Community Initiatives for Improved Relations in Rural Communities Project in Beaufort County, North Carolina.
Abstract
One table provides an overview of selected demographic characteristics of the Beaufort County population and research sample (sex, race, median age, and median family income), as reported from the 1990 census and the sample. The racial distribution, age, and median family income were comparable between the population and the sample; however, there were proportionately slightly more females than males in the sample. Another table provides similar demographic data for Washington City, followed by a table of such data for Belhaven City. A table also provides a breakdown and comparison of population and sample demographic characteristics for Beaufort County/Non-City. A fifth table presents an overview of the total student population by race, sex, and grade for each of five schools, along with an overview of the youth sample (n=340). Comparable information from the 1990 census for Beaufort County residents aged 11-18 years old is also provided. The sixth table provides an overview of the demographic data on the police officers of the agencies that participated in the project (sex, race, number of years on the force, and median age). Selected findings are presented on the community's (youth and adult) thoughts about their safety, both community and police views about their interactions, and the six priority assumptions. Attachments provide a breakdown of community views on what is best about police, what is worst about police, and what police can do to improve relations with citizens. The codebook for the project is included.
