This is the National Institute of Justice's annual report on research, development, and evaluation for Fiscal Year 2019, pursuant to Title 1 of the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968 and Title II of the Homeland Security Act of 2002. In Fiscal Year 2019 (FY 2019), NIJ supported numerous research projects—including the first phase of a project that will involve eight to 10 local site-level evaluations, as well as one national assessment of Project Safe Neighborhoods. Beginning in FY 2019, NIJ also played a key role in major components of The First Step Act of 2018 and published several reports in response to the act. NIJ released many other publications in FY 2019, including two editions of the award-winning NIJ Journal, one celebrating NIJ's 50th Anniversary and another focusing on law enforcement. During FY 2019, NIJ continued to fund research that crosses scientific disciplines and leverages the expertise of both researchers and those working within the criminal justice system.
