This article describes the development and goals of the National Center for Forensic Science (NCFS).
Developed through a partnership between the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) and the University of Central Florida (UCF), the NCFS focuses on research and training in arson and explosives. Prior to the development of the NCFS, the UCF already enjoyed a prestigious national reputation for its forensic science program, which is a component of its Chemistry Department. In one of its alumni surveys, UCF asked alumni how the university could improve its forensics training. The results showed that alumni working in forensic laboratories wanted to learn more about arson and explosives. The NCFS was thus born and focuses primarily on developing a restricted-access electronic library for forensic and law enforcement professionals, providing support for the development of standard protocols for the collection and analysis of fire and explosion debris, offering training courses, and conducting research. A 13-member advisory board directs NCFS research and training initiatives. Contact information is presented for NCFS.
