Annotation

The South Seattle Crime Reduction Project was evaluated descriptively starting in early 1989 to determine the project's origins and development, the factors that helped or hindered the effort, and implications for other communities considering a crime prevention effort emphasizing police-citizen cooperation and community policing.

Abstract

The project consisted of citizen efforts conducted through the South Seattle Crime Prevention Council and the organization of the Anticrime Team by the South Precinct of the Seattle Police Department. The department's effort emphasized problem-oriented policing. The analysis showed that the combination of several actions, which were not necessarily connected or even planned, produced what appears to be an extremely promising and comprehensive approach to the effective and efficient delivery of police services. The program is currently being implemented throughout the city. Recommended actions for the future include strong program support throughout the city, coordination with other city agencies and community groups, and further research.
