Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2009, $38,000)
This award will provide the WestEd, Health and Human Development Program funding to develop a study that will utilize data from the Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods Longitudinal Cohort Study of cohorts 12-18, the community survey from 1994-95 and 2000-01, and the Census 2000, to better understand the extraordinary lives and protective factors for those youth who escape adversity within the context of violence and become caring, competent adults. Using multilevel theory and methods, this prospective study aims to explain the variation in behavioral resilience over time among urban adolescents differentially exposed to community violence, as a function of select developmental assets, accounting for individual and neighborhood-level risks. The WestEd, Health and Human Development Program will oversee the evaluation, process documentation, and dissemination activities. ca/ncf
