There has been a marked increase in the use of lubricants in sexual assault crimes in recent years. Lubricants may be used to facilitate an act, be present in the background of samples, or be transferred due to the use of lubricated condoms. This webinar is focused on providing detailed information on lubricants so that examiners are better prepared to analyze and interpret the results from lubricant testing. The course will provide background information on the types of samples that are typically encountered in lubricant analyses including: commercial sexual lubricants, improvised lubricants, and condoms. The webinar will touch on the analytical methods employed to examine lubricants, focusing on their capabilities and limitations. An introduction to quantitative analyses of lubricant materials will be explored. The webinar will discuss in-house studies focused on improving methodologies and increasing specificity, as well as foundational validation studies demonstrating the effectiveness of lubricant analyses. The course will conclude with factors which affect the interpretation of evidence and reporting of lubricant results. Upon completion of the webinar, attendees should have sufficient foundational information to interpret results and provide reports on the analysis of lubricants in casework.
