The National Former Prisoner Survey (NFPS) is part of the BJS National Prison Rape Statistics Program, which gathers mandated data on the incidence and prevalence of sexual assault in correctional facilities under the Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003 (PREA; P.L. 108-79). The Act requires the collection of information from formerly incarcerated persons on any experiences of sexual assault while incarcerated.
Collected data from parole supervising organizations about the organizational structure of the agencies, staffing, supervision levels of convicted persons, and whether the parole agency had a role in considering persons for release, setting the conditions of supervision, and conducting parole revocation hearings. In 2004, the National Institute of Justice created the social science research on forensic sciences (SSRFS) research program to explore the impact of forensic sciences on the criminal justice system and the administration of justice. Much of the early research from the SSRFS program focused on DNA processing and the use of DNA in investigations and prosecutions.
