Abstract
A summary is provided on the Law Enforcement Social Media Survey conducted by the International Association of Chiefs of Police and the Urban Institute. The survey solicited information from law enforcement agencies on how they are currently using social media. The survey was designed to build on the findings of previous social media surveys and fill gaps in knowledge on how law enforcement agencies use this technology. The survey focused on the various ways agencies use social media, the tone of their online presence, their challenges, and their future needs. A summary is also provided for a report on law enforcement hiring in the 21st Century, “Hiring the 21st Century Law Enforcement Officer: Challenges, Opportunities, and Strategies for Success.” The report reflects discussions and recommendations from a forum held in fall 2016. Insights are offered from law enforcement executives, labor representatives, human resource professionals, and academic experts on how to update hiring practices to attract the best candidates. Issues addressed include psychological screening, educational requirements, promotion policies, and methods for retaining the best officers. Web site addresses for the reports are provided.
