This publication provides the data collection protocol for cranial landmarks and craniometrics in the Subadult Virtual Anthropology Database (SVAD).
This document presents the Subadult Virtual Anthropology Database’s (SVAD) standardized data collection protocol developed to place cranial landmarks and collect cranial landmark coordinates on 3D renderings of subadult crania obtained from computed tomography scans. This protocol was developed as part of National Institute of Justice Award 2019 DU-BX-0039. If the methodology presented herein is used or mentioned in a presentation or publication, then this document needs to be cited. Forty-eight craniometric landmarks are placed on virtual crania. Interlandmark distances (ILDs) from 3D landmark coordinates (x,y,z) are calculated as ILD = √(x1-x2)2 + (y1-y2)2 + (z1-z2)2 with (x1, y1, z1) the coordinates of the first landmark and (x2, y2, z2) the coordinates for the second landmark. The authors strongly encourage all research using this protocol to be submitted to the Subadult Virtual Anthropology Database (SVAD) Zenodo Community to facilitate sharing and discovery of information using this protocol to be submitted to the Subadult Virtual Anthropology Database (SVAD) Zenodo Community to facilitate sharing and discovery of information.
