This paper presents a computer program that was designed to combine popular skull and sex estimation methods into one program, through which trait scores could be easily entered in statistical analyses to produce associated probabilities of sex membership for unknown individuals.
The popularity of compilation manuals, like Standards (Buikstra and Ubelaker 1994), and statistical software programs, such as FORDISC (Jantz and Ousley 2005), was the impetus for the creation of the MorphoPASSE: Morphological Pelvis and Skull Sex Estimation Program. MorphoPASSE was designed to combine the popular Walker (2008) skull and Klales et al. (2012) pelvis sex estimation methods into one program, whereby trait scores could be easily entered in statistical analyses to produce associated probabilities of sex membership for unknown individuals. Data were collected from a diverse worldwide sample of 2,595 individuals for integration into the program. Practitioners enter the skull and pelvis trait scores and then can select the desired population, temporal period, and statistical method to produce an estimate of sex membership that can be used in forensic and bioarchaeological case reports.
