This study evaluates enforcement and prevention efforts against motor vehicle thefts.

Abstract

The study includes an overview of motor vehicle theft in San Diego County, CA; results from interviews with staff of the San Diego Regional Auto Theft Task Force (RATT); description of the creation of a crime analysis and mapping system; and identification and implementation of strategies in target and control areas throughout the county of San Diego. The primary goal of the study was to test the effectiveness of using enhanced crime analysis information for targeting investigations initiated by the RATT and focusing public education and prevention efforts to reduce motor vehicle thefts. The most frequently used strategies were data analysis, surveillance, business investigations and use of informants. Strategies used by RATT to reduce auto theft increased punishment of offenders and educated the citizenry. Specific methods for effective implementation of public education efforts included increasing media coverage and holding community meetings. These methods are under consideration for implementation in target areas. Tables, figures, references
