This standard specifies the minimum performance requirements and methods of testing for the ballistic resistance of police body armor intended to protect the torso against gunfire.

Abstract

The standard is intended for use in testing and procuring body armor for police agencies. The standard does not address threats from knives and sharply pointed instruments and does not deal with armor that uses inserts or other methods to increase the protection provided in localized areas. The standard covers seven types of body armors, classified by level of ballistic performance and ranging from routine full-time wear to armor most appropriate for use during tactical operations. The standard includes acceptance criteria, workmanship, labeling, sampling methods for testing, test equipment and setup, methods of examining workmanship and labels, and procedures for conducting ballistic tests. Figures, a table, a list of definitions, and an appended discussion of the selection of police body armor.
