Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2019, $91,097)

The proposed dissertation research will study the reentry experiences of offenders with substance use disorders (SUD) released during the opioid crisis. The applicant proposes a mixed-methods research design using longitudinal in-depth interviews and survival analysis of Pennsylvania Department of Corrections (DOC) administrative data. A series of three pre- and post-release interviews of 88 participants in the Therapeutic Community (TC) Prison Inmate Network Study (funded by NIH) will be concluded and coded in Phases I and II. PA DOC administrative data will be obtained to study three-year recidivism trends for the 2005, 2010, and 2015 reentering cohorts. These cohorts were chosen to exemplify the impact of the opioid crisis on reentering offenders.
