Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2014, $30,671)
CPD's strategy is to enhance its existing Cold Case Unit with additional overtime for case and evidence review and investigative travel. Goals and Objectives:
Goal 1: Identify, review and prioritize homicide cold cases that have the potential to be solved using DNA analysis. Objective 1: Utilize Cold Case Unit to increase the total number of identified cold cases where evidence is reviewed for the presence of biological evidence.
Goal 2: Identify, collect, retrieve and evaluate biological evidence from cases that are expected to contain DNA.
Objective 1: Locate crime scene evidence containing biological material.
Goal 3: Submit appropriate biological evidence to laboratory for DNA analysis and testing. Objective 1: Increase the number of cold case DNA profiles generated and entered into the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS).
CPD will partner with the State Attorney's Office; Medical Examiner's Office; Pinellas County Sheriff's Office Forensics Unit; and Pinellas County Forensic Laboratory. ca/ncf
