Causes of Injuries and Deaths Associated with Law Enforcement Officer Line-of-Duty Vehicular Accidents

This award completes funding for 2011-IJ-CX-K013. This competitive award was made in response to a proposal submitted by RAND Corporation to an NIJ FY2011 solicitation "Officer Traffic Safety Research and Technology Development for Criminal Justice Applications". This project was only partially funded with the initial award. Between 2001 and 2010 traffic accidents were the leading cause of law enforcement officer line-of-duty deaths. This research will examine the factors associated with those accidents as well as factors that influenced the types and severity of injuries that result from them. This research will be used to develop and prioritize solutions to reducing the number of officers injured and killed in traffic crashes.
