The purpose of this research is to provide new information about the causes of law enforcement officer vehicle crashes and injuries that can inform the development of interventions to reduce the risk from vehicle crashes. The specific objectives of the proposed project are to collect new data about the direct and indirect factors leading to vehicle crashes and to officer injuries associated with those crashes and identify and prioritize recommendations for policies, practices, and technology development that will reduce the number of officers killed and injured in traffic crashes. Data will be collected at the individual crash-level from a nationwide sample of law enforcement departments. When possible, these prospective data will be augmented by historical data previously gathered by departments participating in the study.
