Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $500,000)
The purpose of these funds will be used for MDPD to use these grant funds to enhance its present Cold Case Squads/Teams within the Sexual Crimes and Homicide Bureaus mainly by adding personnel, increasing the sex crimes cold case unit from 3 to 7 and the homicide cold case unit from 3 to 10. Grant funds will allow for the review and investigation of approximately 1,200 sexual crimes and 309 homicide cases. Prior to receiving a 2007 cold case award the MDPD was successful in using backlog reduction funds on unsolved/cold sexual assault cases. This work produced a 42% CODIS hit rate in these cases.
