Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $282,505)
The purpose of these funds will be used to deliver two five day DNA workshops in 2009. The first goal will consist of training in STR DNA, miniSTRs, capillary electrophoresis and micro-fluidics and the second goal will cover population statistics, Y chromosome DNA, mixture interpretation, and low copy number. These workshops will be a combination of lecture and laboratory. During this period Florida International University will develop a third goal which will be a five day workshop consisting of non-human DNA typing topics. All three workshops will be delivered in 2010 for a total of five workshops. Each workshop will hold up to eighteen students for a total of ninety entry level and/or experienced DNA analysts trained. The workshops will also be available in Spanish. A mechanism is also in place to receive CEU credits for taking the workshops.
