The three component objectives to be fulfilled by this research are: 1) to develop a scientific understanding of the physics and chemistry of smoke deposition and provide a scientific basis for smoke pattern analysis; 2) to develop practical methods for documenting smoke deposition patterns and collecting smoke deposition samples; and 3) to develop practical analytical chemistry methods for smoke deposition samples that can be carried out in forensic chemical analysis laboratories.
