The goal of this project is to develop a comprehensive DNA database for identification of forensically important Diptera (flies) for use in determining postmortem interval (PMI). Specifically, it will identify a locus within the mtDNA genome that is maximally informative for species determination, 2) produce a comprehensive database for all fly species that are found in the continental U.S. and have been reported in the literature as being associated with human remains, and 3) perform SWGDAM validation studies to assist in the development of a crime laboratory tool.
