The Context of Drug Markets: An Examination of the Direct and Indirect Influence of Gender in Drug Market Activities

The purpose of this project is to examine whether drug market activities vary by gender, using various drug market indicators such as acquisition methods, sources of purchases, location of purchases, dollar amount of purchases, and frequency of purchases. This project will also examine whether the effect of gender in drug markets is constant across racial/ethnic groups, drug type, and various community characteristics. This research will examine all drug market indicators from 2000-2001 ADAM data. In order to examine the direct and indirect effect of gender in drug markets, arrestees' data on gender, race/ethnicity, and drug type will be utilized. The 2000 Census date will be merged with the ADAM data (using arrestees' residential zip code) to examine how community-level factors mediate the role of gender in drug markets.
