The purpose of this project is to establish a DNA testing
facility with Short Tandem Repeat (STR) analysis capability in the Baltimore City Police Department Laboratory Division. This in-house capability would reduce the time required for DNA analysis, currently done by outside vendors, by an estimated 50%.Funds will be used for necessary equipment, supplies, analyst training, and expert consultation and external audits to ensure implementation of DNA analysis according to TWGDAM and DNA Advisory Board guidelines.The lab will hire a contractor to act as DNA Technical Leader until a full-time,qualified individual is hired. A satellite CODIS site will be set up to facilitate the exchange of DNA identification records with other law enforcement agencies in the State of Maryland.
