Drug offenders account for approximately 20 percent of all state prison inmates. Inmates sentenced for violent offenses (including murder, rape and robbery) account for approximately half of state prison inmates. Inmates sentenced for property crimes (including burglary, fraud and motor vehicle theft) account for another 20 percent of state prison inmates. Approximately 9 percent of state prison inmates were sentenced for public order offenses, which include drunk driving, vice, weapons and other offenses. The remaining 1 percent were sentenced for other crimes.
