This document presents findings from 36 Arrestee Drug Abuse Monitoring (ADAM) sites that collected data in 2002.

Abstract

The ADAM program measures the extent of drug use in the high-risk population of people that have been arrested and booked or detained. The data are collected in participating counties through probability-based sampling of male arrestees in adult booking facilities and purposive sampling of female arrestees and juvenile detainees. Information comes from interviews and urinalyses obtained voluntarily and recorded confidentially in booking facilities, usually on the day of arrest and always within 48 hours of arrest. The tables show the ADAM sites by geographic location, number of booking facilities, and number of interviews completed in each quarter. Demographic data about ADAM interviewees are provided. The percentage of arrestees that tested positive for the most commonly reported drugs is displayed. The frequency that arrestees reported using selected drugs over the prior year is indicated. The rates of arrestee heavy drinking and drug use and their risk for dependence, as determined by a clinically based dependency screen, are shown. Arrestees’ drug market participation, including failed attempts to purchase drugs, is detailed. The proportion of arrestees that reported receiving drug, alcohol, and mental health treatment in the prior year is displayed. 30 tables
