This NIJ (National Institute of Justice) Fact Sheet provides information on NIJ's new public safety bomb suit standard.
This NIJ Fact Sheet, developed by the National Law Enforcement and Corrections Technology Center (NLECTC), provides information on NIJ's new public safety bomb suit standard. This effort was undertaken by NIJ because to date, no standard exists for bomb suits worn by public safety bomb technicians in this country. This standard, developed at the request of the National Bomb Squad Commanders Advisory Board, focuses on six key research areas: blast overpressure, fragmentation, impact, flame, optics, and ergonomics. The new standards include minimum requirements for form and fit, performance, testing, documentation, and labeling of personal protection equipment designed to protect bomb technicians; minimum requirements for blast overpressure requirements; and requirements for the protection for the head, face, neck, thorax/abdomen, pelvis, arms, and legs of bomb disposal technicians.
