This fourth of four appendixes of the Fingerprint Sourcebook (NCJ-249575) - which provides educational, training, and research information on fingerprint analysis for the international scientific community - presents Version 3.0 of the Scientific Working Group on Friction Ridge Analysis, Study and Technology's (SWGFAST's) Standard Terminology of Friction Ridge Examination.
Standard definitions are provided for terminology used in the friction-ridge discipline. Common definitions found in other reference sources may not be included. Definitions are provided for 73 terms. Included is terminology for the scientific method of Analysis, Comparison, Evaluation, and Verification (ACE-V), as well as for the Automated Palmprint Identification System (APIS), a generic term for a palm print (or complete friction-iridge exemplar) matching, storage, and retrieval system. Terminology is also provided for various pattern types of friction ridges, as well as terminology related to factors in decisionmaking regarding friction-ridge comparisons and each level of detail for latent prints.
