This Compendium provides information on and online access to hundreds of federally supported research projects related to violence against women, which reflect the decades of commitment by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) to research that facilitates protecting women in America from all forms of violence.
The NIJ-funded research presented has the following goals: 1) the identification and understanding of the dimensions of violence against women; 2) the identification of policies and practices that assist state and local justice and victim-support agencies in addressing violence against women; 3) the effective training of agency professionals in how to assist women who are survivors of violence and/or are at risk of violence; and 4) the linking of federal, state, and local agencies in sharing knowledge, best practices, and data collection needed for an accurate understanding of and effective approaches to countering violence against women in our national culture. The federal Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) of 1994 has authorized research funding administered by NIJ. VAWA primarily addresses four major forms of violence against women: domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking. In 2013, VAWA was expanded to include protections for children of self-petitioning parents who had died during the petition process, as well as to address the needs of underserved populations. This Compendium provides online access to NIJ research grants in the following broad areas in terms of their relevance to and policies/practices related to violence against women: 1) Justice and Related Systems; 2) Definition and Measurement; 3) Epidemiology; 4) Social and Cultural Content; 5) Trafficking in Persons; 6) VAWA Evaluations; 7) Synthesis of Existing Information; 8) NIJ Jointly Funded Projects; 9) Teen Dating Violence; 10) Violence Against Indian Women; and 11) Special Projects.
