Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2015, $197,164)

The scope of this project is to increase the analysis capacity and efficiency of the DNA lab, enhance the current DNA Database sample process efficiency, capacity and turnaround, and diversify the training opportunities provided to the DNA staff.
The Objectives are:
1. Increase the analysis capacity and efficiency of the DNA lab by replacing two inoperable freezers, each analyst having a microscope camera and equipment necessary for processing casework samples, as well as validating a new DNA amplification kit containing the expanded CODIS core loci.
2. Improve the DNA Database analysis efficiency, capacity, and turnaround time by implementing a second FTA card puncher, purchasing a document scanner, and validating direct amplification of samples using a kit containing the newly expanded CODIS core loci.
3. Utilize training funds for continuing education opportunities for DNA casework and database analysts.
4. Utilize funds to perform the required external quality assurance audit of the DNA casework and database sections.
Project Design and Methodology :
Idaho State Police Forensic Services (ISPFS) will use the 2015 DNA funds to refine the DNA and DNA database programs. The strategic plan of the DNA section this year is to focus efforts on process efficiency and to increase capacity through validation of new technology. The objectives written in this grant will adhere to that strategic plan by improving the capacity and quality of the DNA unit.
