Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2014, $270,000)

The proposed project will involve the following participating agencies: the Homicide and Special Victim Squads, the Victim Advocate Unit, Sorenson Forensics (private laboratory) and the Salt Lake City District Attorney's Office. These partners will work together to achieve the following goals:
Goal 1: Assess the police departments UCR Part 1 homicide and forcible rape violent crime cold cases for the possibility of using DNA analysis to solve the case.
Goal 2: Provide evidence collection and case packaging training for police department personnel.
Goal 3: Investigate and solve targeted cold cases.
Goal 4: Bring a level of closure to victims, family and friends of unsolved violent crime homicides and forcible rapes and increase the public trust in the police department.
