Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2014, $269,987)
The primary goal of this project is to solve cold case homicide and sex crimes in Orleans Parish using modern DNA technology. The objectives are to increase the number of DNA profiles uploaded into the federal CODIS system from cold case homicide and sex crimes; reduce the number of unsolved cold case homicides and sex crimes in Orleans Parish; increase the number of prosecutions for cold case homicides and sex crimes in Orleans Parish; and establish a model for interagency efforts to screen and prioritize cold case evidence for DNA testing that can be replicated in other jurisdictions in Louisiana.
Funding will be used to provide salaries for a dedicated assistant District Attorney, overtime for NOPD detectives/personnel and LSP--Crime Lab analysts and technicians. Supplies will also be purchased for use by LSP--Crime Lab analysts for testing.
