Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2010, $687,250)
Funding will be used to put together a multi faceted team which will engage retired investigators, a retired prosecutor, and a retired secretary who will volunteer their time and talents to work alongside the detectives and forensic staff, reviewing these "cold" robbery cases to determine if there is DNA evidence that could be evaluated/re-evaluated with advanced DNA technology, investigative leads that may result in the identification of new witnesses and/or suspects, or other information in the community that could lead to resolution of these cold cases. The Major Crimes Units from the Marion County Sheriff's Office and Ocala Police Department, will follow up on investigative leads, conduct necessary interviews, locate evidence, and follow-up on any other recommendations made by the ICE Unit. As appropriate, DNA evidence will be prepared, screened and evaluated by the Marion County Sheriff's Office Forensic DNA Serology and Screening Lab, in partnership with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement Regional Crime Lab.
