Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2010, $474,341)
The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) requests funds to create a Cold Case Unit to review approximately 300 cold cases from Oklahoma law enforcement agencies, these will include a mixture of homicides, sexual assaults and other UCR Part 1 violent crimes. The goal is to review at least 85% of these identified cases during the course of this grant and that 75 to 100 cases have biological evidence suitable for DNA testing be identified and analyzed. Within the Cold Case Unit, a comprehensive team approach will be used, involving OSBI investigative and laboratory personnel, working directly with world renowned experts from the University of Central Oklahoma Forensic Science Institute (UCO FSI), the Oklahoma Cold Case Association, other law enforcement agencies and District Attorneys to prioritize cases for further investigation.
