Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2009, $395,975)
The goal of the project is to reduce the backlog of unidentified persons cases, most of which consist of skeletal remains. As part of the proposed work, the California Department of Justice Missing Persons DNA Program (MPDP) will outsource 100 cases of skeletal remains to one or more accredited, private forensic DNA testing laboratories. The selected laboratory (or laboratories) would have the capability of typing skeletal remains using both STR and mtDNA sequence analysis and would return data developed using the same methodology and software that the MPDP uses. The results would be reviewed by staff in the MPDP.
