Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $464,078)

The specific project goals of this funding are; First, develop an intensive five-day traditional classroom and field exercises in the state-of-the-art recovery, documentation, and preservation of human skeletal or decomposed remains with particular focus on buried bodies, and scattered remains (forensic anthropology) including hair, fibers and entomological evidence; Second, develop a comprehensive podcast distance learning course as a companion to the on-site course that will have three direct benefits: a) increase the availability of the program nationwide to all personnel in all law enforcement departments, b) reduce the training costs for all departments, and c) reduce the amount of time away from the field for agency personnel. Proper training of these individuals will help to decrease the backlog of unidentified remains and missing persons cases in medical examiner's offices and police agencies around the country which a BJS survey estimates at as many as 40,000. ca/ncf
