The Virginia Department of Forensic Science (DFS) and the Virginia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME), co-located in four regions of the state, are responsible for forensic analysis and death investigation for the Commonwealth. DFS will partner with the OCME to initiate a joint effort to conduct DNA analysis of human remains currently in OCME storage. DFS will conduct STR and mitochondrial DNA tests of all samples submitted. When DFS completes the DNA testing, the DNA profiles will be entered into the CODIS+mito database.
