Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $749,695)
The purpose of these funds will be used for the Phoenix PD to review 700 cold cases from the current pending 1,000 homicide and sexual assault cold cases, screen the evidence from 420 of these cases for possible biological evidence, analyze 350 of these cases for DNA and enter suitable profiles into CODIS, collaborate with criminal justice community partners and victims (victim families) to forward all suitable cases for prosecution and establish an organizational infrastructure to successfully investigate cold cases well after the grant monies have been utilized. Overtime for detectives and forensic scientists, the purchase and implementation of a tracking system, and outsourcing of DNA analysis will be funded to reach these goals.
