Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $189,092)

The purpose of these funds will be used for the Omaha Police Department and the Lincoln Police Department (Nebraska's two largest cities), to collaborate with the Nebraska State Patrol in an effort to solve/clear some of their violent crime cold cases. This project will focus on their cases, continue with current project cases and will also be open to cases presented by the Nebraska State Patrol and local law enforcement agencies. Currently, there is an awareness of at least 300 unsolved, violent crime cold cases at the local level in varying degrees of completion. The cities of Omaha and Lincoln estimate that together they have 175 unsolved homicides with approximately ten, new unsolved cases added annually. This 18 month project primarily provides for state and local overtime, a fulltime crime analyst, supplies, equipment and DNA testing costs.
