Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2007, $500,000)
The Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences (ADFS) will use FY2007 funds to reduce the backlog of DNA casework throughout Alabama by implementing a comprehensive high throughput DNA testing strategy that is coupled with improving the infrastructure and analysis capacity in the Department's Regional DNA Laboratories.
ADFS will also enhance the infrastructure and analysis processes: (1) Improving the infrastructure and analysis capacity of a Regional DNA Laboratory; (2) Providing the Regional DNA Laboratory with sufficient equipment and resources in the critical areas of the DNA Casework process to insure that DNA samples are processed efficiently and cost-effectively; and (3) implementing the equipment and additional resource configuration in a timely manner to prevent future DNA backlogs from accumulating, thereby aiding the Criminal Justice system in realizing the full potential of DNA technology
