Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2007, $2,952,806)
The International Biometric Group (IBG) Team will establish a Sensors, Surveillance, and Biometric Technologies Center of Excellence dedicated to working closely with and supporting the needs of National Institute of Justice. This competitively awarded research, development, and evaluation effort will lead to the adoption of new tools and technologies for use by state and local criminal justice agencies in the area of concealed weapons detection that will remotely detect suicide bomb belts or devices to identify and/or neutralize vehicle bombs. These funds will also be used to fund the underlying work necessary to the development and adoption of these tools and technologies, such as vehicle bomb workshops that seek to elicit the underlying functional requirements necessary to the development of the tools and technologies needed to deal with vehicle bombs.
This effort will lead to the adoption of new tools and technologies for use by local law enforcement agencies. They will also be used to fund the underlying work necessary to the development and adoption of these technologies.
IBG will Host and Support TWGs and Focus Group, Establish and Manage Law Enforcement and Corrections Biometrics and Sensors and Surveillance Pilots, Establish and Manage a CWD/CED and TWS Test and Evaluation Program, Establish and Manage a Law Enforcement Aviation Pilot.
The RDT&E support program incorporates three main functions: Identify practitioner needs; Support development of technologies to address those needs; Facilitate and support the adoption of the technologies.
