Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2007, $227,443)

The principal objective of this research is to characterize the fire dynamics of unventilated and marginally ventilated compartment fires, specifically to understand the differences in burning dynamics between smoldering, flaming and accelerant-induced flaming fires. The applicant proposes using full-scale experiments and computer modeling in an effort to understand how the lack of ventilation affects both tenability and fire development. This research will also evaluate the accuracy, utility and limitations of fire modeling as a forensic tool to analyze limited ventilation compartment fires by testing two commonly used models.
