Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2007, $177,359)
The Marion County Sheriff's Office will utilize grant funding and volunteer cold case agents to provide the additional man hours and overtime needed in the area of cold case homicide investigations. Evidence will be reviewed with the assistance of the Evidence Custodian and all current printouts of evidence and prior submissions. The Marion County Sheriff's Office has a Memorandum of Understanding with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement in which both parties agree that serological /DNA analysis has become an effective, invaluable and integral tool in the investigation of crimes and desire to enhance its availability and reduce backlogs. Results expected from implementing this program include the identification of cold case homicides through case review that have the potential to be solved through DNA analysis and the locating analysis of such biological evidence as appropriate.
