Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2006, $189,949)
This award will install and evaluate a next-generation wireless school bus monitoring, tracking and surveillance solution, called SharpRIDE. SharpRIDE has the following key elements: Use high-bandwidth EVDO woreless with GPS technology to allow for realtime broadband communication with school buses including fleet tracking on GIS map; Real-time Video feed transmission from bus to central command & control center for automatic alerts to abnormal situations e.g. fights, unauthorized/concealed materials, overloading and other potentially harmful situations; FIPS 140-2 validated secure RFID-based tracking of student boarding and exiting of school bus. By attaching an RFID/Bio Access reader at the bus entrance and coupling the EVDO transmitter, a real-time monitoring capability is feasible; The use of a multi-functional biometric Java card with a contact less interface is proposed so that it can also be used as a regular student ID badge for premise access and for miscellaneous applications such as cafeteria counts.
