Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2005, $31,151)
The goal of the proposed project is to evaluate possible sources of variability of ultraviolet active compounds extracted from acrylic and polyester fibers and detected using HPLC-MS. Possible sources that will be evaluated include (1) the effect of radiation, both natural and manmade, on fiber samples over time; (2) the variation, if any, among and between yarn produced by a single manufacturer; and (3)the effect, if any, of various types of laundering treatments, including the use of various detergents and common household additives.
