Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2004, $750,000)
The objectives of this project will be to interact with Medical Examiners, Coroners Offices, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, the National Center for Missing Adults, and law enforcement agencies throughout the US, in order to identify and collect unidentified human remains and reference samples from families with missing loved ones. The goal of this project will be to enter into CODIS the STR and mtDNA profiles from a minimum of 850 samples within an 18-month period. The profiles will be generated from DNA obtained from 150 unidentified remains and 700 family reference samples. The 850 samples will be above and beyond the current capability of the UNTHSC DNA Identity Laboratory. The plan to accomplish this includes the purchase and implementation of a LIMS system, the addition of automation at the front and back ends of the Nuclear and Mitochondria DNA testing methods, and through the hiring and training of new forensic analysts.
