Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2004, $20,000)
Bayesian Networks are a graphic tool to communicate complex probabilistic reasoning required in the evaluation of DNA evidence. The goal of this project is to adapt a commercially available computer program for describing Bayesian Networks to incorporate information from subpopulation differences and mutation rates of the DNA markers examined in forensic cases. The deliverable is a Ph.D. dissertation focusing on improved statistical methods for interpreting DNA data.
Objectives:
1. Use existing software to examine the utility of Bayesian Networks for interpreting results in complex forensic cases.
2. Disseminate information generated from this project to the forensic community.
